Ifetayo’s mission is to prepare young people and their families
for all aspects of their lives through comprehensive and
holistic programs that help to empower them to become self-sufficient,
productive adults who are actively engaged in the improvement
of their communities. This mission is carried out as we
work to achieve the five primary objectives of the organization
which are:
- to develop cultural awareness and self-esteem by exposing
youth and families to traditional African artistic forms
and their evolution into contemporary cultures;
- to provide youth, families and communities of African
descent with the tools required to become self-sufficient
and to transcend challenges that are perpetuated across
generations;
- to support youth, families and communities of African
descent to reach their optimum potential by attaining
a harmonious balance between the mind, body, and spirit
and through proper nutrition, exercise, and cultural awareness;
- to create leaders for local neighborhoods and international
communities, and
- to develop, document and disseminate a comprehensive,
African-centered approach to youth and community development.
Program Summary:
Ifetayo’s Arts in Education Program is designed to provide
Acting, Creative Writing, Visual Arts, Dance, and Music
instruction through vital and engaging interdisciplinary
arts education, tutorials, peer and adult mentoring for
New York City Board of Education public schools. Ifetayo
provides ancillary services by working with school administrators,
teachers, youth, parent associations and other community-based
organizations. The program combines and utilizes resources
to create a holistic community that encourages youth and
family development and directly addresses challenges identified
by the school community. The objective is to collectively
plan, implement, coordinate, expand, and integrate educational
services. The program provides linkages to both National
and New York State academic and artistic standards, tools
for teacher motivation and skill development and improves
parent involvement and support.
Position Description:
The role of the Assistant Teaching Artist is to aid the
Teaching Artist and Classroom Teacher in their weekly AIE
class time including the set up and breakdown of the class,
assisting the Teaching Artist with implementing the activity
for the day, reviewing and enforcing class management agreements,
exploring and learning the material so that they can help
the students, getting training to further their understanding
of teaching and what it means to be a teacher with Ifetayo.
They are also to prepare related documentation of the AIE
classroom activities and Teaching Artist’s teaching methods.
Key Responsibilities
Essential duties include but are not limited to the
following:
- Assist Teaching Artist while gathering the skills to
teach in desired discipline
- In class Responsibilities: - Help Teaching Artist and
Classroom Teacher with various activities during class
time, for example: aid students, give out necessary materials
to the students, taking attendance and classroom management.
- Document Classroom Activities, for example: taking photos,
taking written notes on each student’s progress and written
documentation of teachers’ methods.
- Prepare written documentation of teachers’ teaching
methods, due once every 2 months. - What teaching methods
were effective and why? How were these methods presented
in the classroom? - What teaching methods were not effective
and why? How would you suggest the AIE Educator modify
his/her educational approach? - What would you suggest
were the goals for this particular lesson? What lead you
to make this decision? - How would you incorporate the
positive elements you perceived in the class in your own
AIE class time?
- Required to follow a monthly work plan based on key
responsibilities
- Participate and assist in all AIE workshops and Professional
Development Workshops and Planning meetings
- Meet with Teaching Artist regularly to help plan lessons,
prepare for classes, problem solve, discuss concerns,
and to collaborate on Progress Note competition
- Provide monthly progress reports on our state of the
art electronic evaluation module on students in which
you evaluate the implementation of related goals and children’s
assessment of related activities
- Assist with end session productions by being available
on both the technical rehearsal and actual show date.
Assistance will include volunteering help backstage with
students, assisting with set up and break down, supporting
students with quick changes and other assigned duties
- Submit invoices in a timely manner (invoices are due
the 1st day of the month)
- Be prepared for an evaluation meeting at the end of
the year to assess your progress
Qualifications:
- Strong interest in youth development and developing
youth through the arts
- Background as a developing artist, with a minimum of
two years training experience in respective discipline
- Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to relate to
diverse populations and work with both management and
direct service staff
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Good organizing, planning, and presentation skills
