PROGRAM: Cultural Arts Program
Title: Cultural Arts Program Associate
Location: Brooklyn
Reports to: President/CEO

Organizational Mission:
Ifetayo's mission is to prepare young people for all aspects of their lives through comprehensive and holistic programs that help to empower them to become self-sufficient, productive adults who are actively engaged in the improvement of their communities. This mission is carried out as we work to achieve the five primary objectives of the organization which are:

  1. to develop cultural awareness and self-esteem by exposing youth and families to traditional African artistic forms and their evolution into contemporary cultures;
  2. to provide youth, families and communities of African descent with the tools required to become self-sufficient and to transcend challenges that are perpetuated across generations;
  3. to support youth, families and communities of African descent to reach their optimum potential by attaining a harmonious balance between the mind, body, and spirit and through proper nutrition, exercise, and cultural awareness;
  4. to create leaders for local neighborhoods and international communities, and
  5. to develop, document and disseminate a comprehensive, African-centered approach to youth

Program Summary:
The Cultural Arts Program is dedicated to creating an avenue for artistic and cultural expression that encourages heightened self-esteem by ensuring an atmosphere in which youth can excel while learning technical skills that enable them to express themselves with grace, clarity and dignity. Classes are offered weekly on Saturday in dance (African, Ballet, Modern, Hip Hop), music (Djimbe ,Trap Drum, Voice, Flute, Saxophone, Keyboard, Balafon, Brazilian Percussion), drama (Toddler Creative Expressions and Acting), and visual arts (Fashion Design and Construction, Jewelry Making, Painting, Sketching and Drawing and Sculpture). Ifetayo serves over 230 children between the ages of 2 -21. The goal of the Cultural Arts Program is to promote and facilitate the engagement of students in their development in the arts, while enhancing their cultural literacy, citizenship skills and personal growth as well rounded and healthy members of society. By attracting and retaining high level, notable artists, many in the second phase of their career, we expose the youth to experienced world renowned professionals, with whom students may otherwise not have access. The Cultural Arts program is an exploration to create a positive self-image amongst community youth while developing knowledge of self, through the use of various art disciplines as they relate to the culture of the African Diaspora. This program facilitates the fulfillment of Ifetayo’s mission to address the creative, social, educational, cultural and economic needs of Brooklyn and surrounding communities.

Position Description:
The Cultural Arts Program Associate will be responsible for organizing and implementing the highest level of artistic programming for children ages 2-24. The Cultural Arts Program Associate must also work closely with the artists in the program to develop curriculum that expands the artistic voices of the students. This position will require constant communication with the families that attend classes and many opportunities for community development.

Candidates Should:

  • Feel comfortable with and excited about working with diverse groups of families
  • Have specific experience working with communities of the African Diaspora: throughout Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas
  • Embrace Ifetayo's mission and the services we provide
  • Be able to manage a large amount of teachers in the program
  • Have significant experience in adolescent health and/or youth development
  • Have direct experience working with children/youth in the classroom
  • Have strong writing, editing and communication skills

Key Responsibilities
Essential duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work with the President/CEO to implement Ifetayo’s program goals, strategies and budget
  • Oversee the development and documentation of evaluation and assessment measures of the program, students and staff. This includes bi-monthly in class observations, administration of surveys for parents, student, and teacher and focus groups
  • Work collaboratively with all Ifetayo staff
  • Keep updated information on all families in program
  • Assist teachers in problem solving with troubled students
  • Meet with parents on a weekly basis and remain visible as a support for the community
  • Oversee the coaching and training of students in their respective artistic disciplines
  • Work with teachers to develop artistic curriculum and lesson plans. Ensure that the lessons are carried out and that the milestones for every discipline are reached
  • Establish, organize, and implement, daily routine of program including bathroom passes, safety procedures, announcements, meetings, set- up and break down, etc.
  • Print attendance sheets from the Site Administration webpage weekly
  • Create reports that reflect the current status of the program and hand in on time to the President/CEO
  • Lead capacity-building efforts for the program. This includes but is not limited to establishing, reviewing and improving policies and procedures that address all aspects of program operations and implementation, communication protocols, team building, and strategic/operational planning for the program
  • Plan and attend monthly program and weekly staff meetings
  • Represent Ifetayo at community and professional meetings, conferences and workshops, making presentations where appropriate and sharing information in a timely manner with Ifetayo staff from these meetings
  • Manage the day to day operations of the program
  • Oversee program and staff on-site
  • Insure respectful treatment of program facilities and keeping spaces clean for use
  • Prepare evaluations and report to President/CEO the progress of each teacher and student
  • Weekly check-ins with families of absent students
  • Organize volunteers for program day, special events and end of year production
  • Recruit clients and building connections with community organizations and schools
  • Plan and develop end of year production
  • Create and obtain resources to support program (art supplies, products and services, teachers, etc.)
  • Maintain and organize supplies in storage rooms
Qualifications:
  • Strong interest in youth development and developing youth through the arts
  • Masters degree, Masters in Fine Arts degree or at least 15 years of significant demonstrated experience in the arts
  • Training in at least one artistic discipline, knowledge of arts education philosophy, state and national standards, professional development prototypes, outcome evaluations, education, community activism
  • Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to relate to diverse populations and work with both management and direct service staff
  • Detail oriented ability to manage multiple tasks, to be a team player and to think creatively
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, public speaking and writing skills, with respect for people of all backgrounds and experiences
  • Experience with MS Office (Word, Publisher, Excel, Power Point) required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with a special emphasis on African Diaspora-cultural communication
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong organizing, planning, and presentation skills
