New York, NY. — Ifetayo Cultural Arts
was recognized today by the New York Times Company, the Nonprofit
Coordinating Committee of New York and the New York Regional
Association of Grantmakers as the 2008 winner of The New York
Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Award for Excellent Culturally-Based
Management Strategies. Ifetayo Cultural Arts received a $5,000
cash award and a scholarship of $4,500 to be applied toward
the Columbia Business School Executive Education Institute for
Not-for-Profit Management.
Ifetayo Cultural Arts was selected for this award in recognition
of their culturally-based management and communications strategies,
based on African discussion circles, which guide program development
as well as a focus on results, effective response to emerging
issues and communities, and exemplary communications strategies.
“Organizations such as Ifetayo Cultural Arts exemplify
exceptional management practices and truly reflect some of
the great work that is being done in our communities,”
said Diane McNulty, executive director of community affairs
and media relations, The New York Times.
The New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards are
presented annually to nonprofits in the New York City area
(the five boroughs, Long Island and Westchester) for excellence
in organizational management. The Awards resulted from an
extensive three-step judging process, including two stages
of written applications and site visits where each organization
was judged on their management and laser-like focus on its
mission.
In the initial round of applications, each organization was
asked to explain how they accomplished their goals while addressing
multiple challenges.
“Ifetayo Cultural Arts is a wonderful organization
with great lessons in excellent management practices for any
nonprofit manager,” said Michael Clark, president of
the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York.
“NYRAG applauds these four exceptional organizations
and congratulates their boards, staff and funders for working
together to create strong models of nonprofit management from
which others in the community can learn,” said Ronna
Brown, president of the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers.
